Rock Climbing at Fischer’s Tower, Hell’s Gate

Fischer’s Tower is located near the entrance of Hell’s Gate National Park. Here you will get some of Kenya’s best Rock Climbing. Its height is 25 meters high; it was formed was caused by volcanic activity which formed columns and it was named after Gustav Fischer, an explorer from Germany who arrived there in 1882. It was also the battleground for the fierce standoff between the Maasai warriors who lived there and the geographical expedition belonging to Fischer. These morans stopped Fischer from his quest for Lake Victoria. The high cliffs the tower presents have numerous possible routes, and plenty of ideas and opportunities for abseiling and climbs. The volcanic columns are steady enough for good climbs. At the entrance of Hell’s Gate National Park, they are qualified professional rock-climbing guides. If you want to hire equipment it is right there at the gate.

How to Get To Hell’s Gate

Fischer’s Tower is located in Hell’s Gate which 100km or 62 miles northwest of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and 18 km or 11 miles west of Naivasha town. Because there is no accommodation inside the park, the best time to visit there is during the day. Naivasha is easily accessible by road which is tarred from Nairobi. Also, by air is possible because they are scheduled flights that fly daily to Loldia airstrip. The airstrip is located in the western part of Naivasha town.

It is easy to get to Nairobi, because it is one of the biggest business and transport centers in Africa, and to extend outside Africa. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport code (NBO) serves several both domestic and international flights daily. It is located 15 kms or 9 miles outside the capital, Nairobi.

Naivasha is the ideal stopping point, that you can take a rest in between Maasai Mara and Nairobi, or Nakuru and Nairobi. The distance of Maasai Mara from Naivasha is 170 kms or 105 miles and can take about three and half hours’ drive.
