The Mau Mau Cave, located in Nanyuki in Kenya’s Central Province, roughly 199.2 kilometers north of Nairobi, was used as a hideout by Kenyan Freedom Fighters during the Mau Mau Uprising of 1952 to 1960. It’s around 18 kilometers south of the equator, inside the huge Mount Kenya National Park.
History
Mau Mau Mau liberation fighters discovered the cave opposing the British colonial administration in 1953, shortly after State of Emergency was declared in 1952. After obtaining the location from a Land and Freedom Army member, British forces attacked it in 1959. Approximately 200 persons died in the cave during the bombardment, and their bodies may still be seen among the rubble. The Museums of Kenya gazetted it and named it a national monument in 2003.
