The Nairobi Railway Museum

Railway Museum

The Nairobi Railway Museum is a train museum located next to the Nairobi railway station in Nairobi, Kenya. East African Railways and Harbours Corporation opened it in 1971 with defunct East African Railways artifacts. Kenya Railways is in charge of its operation.

At the museum, there’s an unusual display.
The museum’s train connection has been maintained. This makes it possible to transport museum exhibits quickly for maintenance and add objects to the collection.

The three functioning steam locomotives are safely stored undercover within the main railway works. To see them, visitors must make an appointment. They haven’t been utilized in a long time. 301 (2301), one of the display locomotives, was featured in the 1985 film Out of Africa.

Early diesel locomotives and passenger coaches are also part of the museum’s collection. Friends of the Railway Museum East Africa (FORM East Africa), a group of railway and locomotive enthusiasts, has aided in acquiring museum objects.

To boost interest in the museum, a working miniature railway was erected in January 2011. This miniature train was previously used in shows to promote Kenya Railways (KR), such as the Nairobi Show. It comprises a locomotive with a gasoline engine and many wooden cars.
Hugh F Marriott, the museum’s W.G. Bagnall engine, was manufactured in Stafford, England, in 1951. It served the Magadi Soda Company as a switcher until 1970. It was relocated to an exhibit outside the Nairobi Railway Station in 2020. Out of Africa, is a 1985 film featuring the number 301.
