Central Island

Central Island, sometimes known as Crocodile Island, is a volcanic island located in Lake Turkana in Kenya. Central Island National Park is also located here, which the Kenya Wildlife Service maintains.

It comprises more than a dozen craters and cones, some of which are filled by small lakes. Two of the larger lakes partially fill the craters up to a km wide and roughly 80 meters deep, the floors near sea level. The highest point is on the dominantly basaltic island reaches 550 m, approximately 190 m above the lake surface. An E-W-trending series of minor explosion craters slices the eastern edge of the 3-km-wide island. Several small islands to the SE indicate partially submerged crater rims. At the same time, more cones and lava plugs exist beneath the lake level near the island.

The youngest Central Islands tuffs and lavas may be as young as Holocene (Karson and Curtis, 1992). (Karson and Curtis, 1992). Fumarolic activity is concentrated around the NE-to-SE rim of the core crater, and tourists witnessed sprays of sulphur from the fumaroles in the 1930s. In 1974 significant emissions of molten sulphur and steam clouds were detected from the mainland.
