Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve

Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve are in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa. The park covers an area of 10 km2 (2,500 acres), whereas the reserve covers an area of 200 km2 (49,400 acres).

How to travel to the location

The park is located in Mombasa, approximately 487 kilometers from Nairobi. It can be reached by road from the city center, and then connected by boat from the different points along the beach, which include: Serena Gate on the shore of Serena Hotel, Severin Gate on the beach of Severin Hotel, Travellers Gate on the beach of Travellers Hotel, Nyali Gate at Mombasa Marine Park Headquarters, and Voyager Gate at Voyager water sports center, among others.

It is a famous beach due to the snorkeling and diving opportunities available. It is the most frequented of Kenya’s marine parks and receives the greatest visitors. Coral reefs can be found in their seas. It also serves as a haven for several marine animals, including crabs and starfish, cucumbers and sea urchins, sea turtles, seagrasses, and migratory birds such as crab plovers.

Bamburi-Nyali Marine Park was formed in 1986. It protects a portion of the Bamburi-Nyali fringing reef’s lagoon environment and the back reef and reef crest.

Warm tropical conditions typify climate conditions in the Marine Park at the surface that range between 25 and 31 degrees Celsius throughout the year, consistent salinity regimes, and moderate nutrient levels.

Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve were established due to the sensitivity of the ecosystems, the presence of endemic and endangered species in the protected regions, and the harmful effects of human activity on the environment.
