Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park is the sole terrestrial park in Kenya’s Nyanza Province. It is home to a variety of wildlife. The park, dubbed the “Last Refuge of the Roan Antelope,” protects Kenya’s last remaining indigenous population of endangered roan antelopes. Currently, the population is on the edge of extinction, with individual people totaling roughly 40 at writing. The park was formerly known as the Lambwe Valley Game Reserve when it was founded in 1966. It was then called “Ruma” in honor of one of Kenya’s most powerful wizards. The greatly feared Gor Mahia, who lived in the park’s vicinity and was responsible for the park’s creation (affiliated to Gor Mahia F.C.). Located in the huge Lambwe Valley, the park is a popular tourist destination.
African leopards (Panthera pardus pardus), roan antelopes (Hippotragus equinus), eastern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli), Rothschild’s giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi), oribis (Ourebia ourebi), cape buffaloes, Lelwel hartebeests (Alcelaphus buselap

The park has been home to over 400 different bird species, earning it the designation of Important Bird Area. One of these avian species is the blue swallow (Hirundo atrocaerulea), a rare intra-African migration bird.
